Execution Date for the Only Woman on Federal Death Row, Lisa Montgomery, Is Set

Lisa Montgomery is set to be executed.

The execution for the only woman on federal death row, which had been scheduled for December 8, had been postponed by a judge. Federal executions had been paused for 17 years before they were resumed early last year.

The last woman to be executed by the US government was Bonnie Brown Heady in 1953 for kidnapping and murder. Ethel Rosenberg had also been executed the same year for espionage.

The postponement was done on the grounds that Montgomery, who was locked up at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Her execution was then rescheduled to January 12 by the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Michael Carvajal, on November 23, 2020. However, Montgomery’s lawyers argued that the date could not be set while a stay was in place.

A court sided with her attorneys, stopping the order from the director of the Bureau of Prisons. However, a panel of three judges on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated her execution date. They concluded the director had acted under the law.

Lisa Marie Montgomery, who was apprehended on December 17, 2004, was charged with kidnapping resulting in death. The then 36-year-old had been convicted of strangling Stinnett from behind. She then cut into Stinnett’s body to remove her unborn child, eight months into gestation, from her womb. The child was safely recovered by authorities and returned to the father. Baby Victoria Jo Stinnett is now 16 years old.

A jury found her guilty of federal kidnapping resulting in death in 2007 and unanimously recommended a death sentence. However, Montgomery’s lawyers argued that she could not face the death penalty since she is mentally unwell as a result of the damage her brain suffered from the beatings she got as a child.

The internet is a phenomenon with a significant influence on people. The serious incident of a woman, Tessica Brown, who applied Gorilla Glue to her hair, was a hit, but not one to be replicated. But a Louisiana man tried it, and the aftermath was dire.

Meet Len Martin, a 37-year-old man who tried to prove Tessica Brown wrong. Martin stated that the Gorilla Glue was not as strong as Tessica was trying to make. To prove her wrong, he took a red cup and applied the Gorilla Glue on it, then placed it on his mouth. His end game was he thought all he would need to remove was to lick it off. Boy, was he wrong!

Martin had to show up to the hospital with the cup stuck to his upper lip. The doctors were luckily able to take the cup off his lips through peeling, to which Martin described it as ‘painful.’ This came with a warning that if his lip did not heal properly, he would have to undergo surgery.

From an internet joke to finding himself in the ER getting a ‘painful peeling’ to get the cup off his lip, Martin had a message for everyone attempting to do the ‘challenge.’ Martin said, “This is definitely not one to try. Let’s just stop this now. … It’s very harmful.”

Martin added that he did not do the stunt for fame, according to what fans had to say. He had learned his lesson just like Tessica Brown had. Here have a look at what fans were throwing his way:

Probable Cause of Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash Revealed

It’s been slightly over a year since the death of the basketball legend Kobe Bryant with his daughter and seven other people in a helicopter crash. An investigation into what caused the helicopter crash has finally been finalized, and one of the theories put out during the crash was to blame for all the lives lost during that day.

Group 3 Aviation via AP

According to reports from the federal authorities, the helicopter crash’s cause was a mistake on the side of the pilot. The pilot’s poor decision making leads to him getting a ‘Spatial Orientation.’ The condition as described by the NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt was described as:

“the powerful, misleading sensations that can confuse a pilot conducting a visual flight who loses visual references, and what types of training can be effective in countering this effect.”

The first mistake that the pilot made was to fly into the fog, knowing how iffy the weather was that morning. He should have returned to land and waited for the weather to become more transparent or taken another pilot with him.

The previous owner of the Island Express Helicopter had always made sure that two pilots were operating the craft. This, he said, would increase the safety of flying the helicopter with one pilot stepping to help where the other pilot can not.

The pilot’s mistake led to the loss of nine lives: Pilot Ara Zobayan died: Payton Chester, 13; Sarah Chester, 45; Alyssa Altobelli, 14; Keri Altobelli, 46; John Altobelli, 56; and Christina Mauser, 38.
