Kendrick Lamar Signs New Deal with Universal Music Publishing

13-time Grammy award winner Kendrick Lamar has signed an exclusive global administration deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, which was announced on Tuesday this week by the company.

Having been named Variety’s first hitmaker of the year back in 2017, Lamar is undoubtedly one of the millennium’s most influential artists. The rapper, who has been flaring rumors concerning his pgLang recording label, which includes artists like Baby Keem among others, has had fans speculating and eagerly waiting for a new project to come out soon. This would be the rapper’s first release since 2017’s ‘Damn.’

The new publishing deal is most likely to increase speculation about Lamar’s long-awaited fourth full-length album. However, no further details about the artist’s new work have been forthcoming. An admin agreement does not mean Lamar will have to sign over his rights to UMPG. The rapper will retain full ownership of his copyright as UMPG will just be handling the administrative services.

When speaking about the Top Dawg artist, the UMPG Chairman and CEO Jody Gerson said, “Kendrick Lamar is not only one of the greatest lyricists that has ever lived, but he has done as much or more than any artist to promote much needed change in our society through music.” Gerson went ahead to speak about Kendrick’s lyrical and songwriting prowess and how much she is looking forward to working with him.

The “Damn” artist has written and produced 14 songs for the soundtrack to “Black Panther,” a Marvel superhero film, for which he won Academy and Grammy Awards.

Lamar was recently involved in a rumor about him leaving Top Dawg Entertainment to focus more on his label pgLang. The rapper addressed the subject in a video shared on the Top Dawg Instagram Page.

In his latest project “My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G)”, DaBaby takes a deep dive into the loss of Glen Johnson, his older brother. Glen Johnson died earlier this month from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was only 34-years-old at the time of his passing.

Following his passing, DaBaby took to Twitter to advocate for mental health awareness and to urge people to continue to check on their loved ones.

“If you can’t get over depression GET HELP, you see a loved one struggling get them help, they refuse the help, MAKE em get treated anyway.”

“You suffer from PTSD take that shit serious & get help!”

“I’m bouta get a therapist my damn self! #LongLiveG”

For a couple of weeks, DaBaby deactivated his social media  after his brother’s passing and took time to go for therapy. He returned to social media to announce the EP to honour G.Throughout the EP, the Rockstar hit-maker narrates the dynamics of him and his brother and how they came to age.

The EP also shows the rapper’s raw emotions of nostalgia and heartache. The 28-year-old rapper starts off the EP with the words “I’m my brother’s keeper and it had been like that forever.

The 7-track EP features guest appearances from artists such as Meek Mill, Polo G, Toosi and No Cap.

Our hearts go out to DaBaby and any person who has lost a loved one. In case the going gets hard reach out and talk to someone. DON’T do life alone.

After losing the BET Hip-hop of the year award to Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Baby has recently lost another award, to Doja Cat. She took home the American Music Award for New Artist of the Year.

Lil Baby’s fans, however, are raging on Twitter. According to them, their star was robbed off an award, again. They think Lil has been working so hard and that he should get credit for it.

They might be right as Lil Baby’s My Turn album went double platinum and according to Quality control,  Lil Baby was the first artist in 2020, to go platinum twice on an album. Quality assurance right?

The category had other nominees like Megan Thee Stallion, Lewis Capaldi, Dababy and Roddy Ricch.

That is not all. Doja won the award for the category, Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist, and Twitter has since been curious to know how the Mooo hit maker won it.

According to some of the tweets, Doja does not fall under that category, as she is more of a Hip-hop artist.

Doja fans supported her regardless, arguing that she really deserved her wins. Her Say so single made it’s way to Tiktok and went viral on the app, and we can attribute part of her journey to fame, to it.

Doja teamed up with Bebe Rexha to perform their collab Baby I’m Jealous during last night’s AMAs, while Lil Baby performed Emotionally Scarred

Did Doja Cat deserve her wins? Tell us what you think through our comment section. We love hearing from you.
