Former Louisville police officer Brett Hankison, one of the three officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor, has been charged by the Jefferson County grand jury has charged with three counts of wanton endangerment of the first degree.

An EMT and aspiring nurse, Breonna Taylor, who was only 26 years old, was shot to death by police in her own home on March 13. In what was called a “botched raid,” police barged into Taylor’s apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, while she lay asleep, firing multiple shots.

Today’s announcement had been eagerly awaited for by the public to determine the fate of the officers responsible for Breona’s murder, months after she was senselessly killed. Her family retained lawyer Benjamin Crump, representing some family members of both Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. Crump filed the lawsuit on April 27, accusing police of wrongful death, excessive force, and gross negligence.

The name Taylor has been chanted all across the country at mass protests against racist police brutality, which spewed following the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis resident, similarly at the hands of police.

Taylor was shot eight times by law enforcement. According to a filed lawsuit by her family, her murder was the consequence of a botched drug-warrant execution. The warrant in question targeted another person residing miles away and was already in custody by the time police entered Taylor’s home, where no drugs were found.
