Rappers That Passed Away in 2020

2020 has been a rough year for the majority who’ve lost their loved ones. The hip-hop community has also gone through a rough patch this year with the passing of so many talented rappers, some of who were fresh in the industry. Below is a list of rappers that passed away this year.

1. 5th Ward Weebie

5th Ward Weebie, born Jerome Cosey, passed away from heart failure on January 9, 2020, following complications from heart surgery for a ruptured artery. He was one of the pioneers of New Orleans bounce music and is also known as the “Bounce King.” Janice Matthews, the late rapper’s mother, stated that the rapper had high blood pressure, which led to him having problems with his heart. He was 42 years old when he passed. “He loved the people of New Orleans. Color was nothing to him. Everybody he felt was the same,” said Matthews.

2. Pop Smoke

Pop Smoke’s untimely death shocked many and was one of the most devastating deaths of 2020. The then 20-year-old was shot dead in an apparent home invasion on February 19, 2020. He will be remembered for helping to elevate the Brooklyn drill scene. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, two of the six men that broke into his Hollywood Hills home reportedly encountered the rapper and fired numerous shots at him. 

He was rushed to L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A few days later, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office announced in their autopsy report that Pop Smoke, born Bashar Jackson, died from a gunshot wound to the torso. On July 9, 2020, five people, three adult males, and two juveniles, were arrested in connection to his death. The murder case is still ongoing.

4. Mac P Dawg

Up and coming rapper Mac P Dawg, an associate of the Los Angeles-based hip-hop group Shoreline Mafia, was shot dead in the Koreatown neighborhood of L.A. on April 6, 2020. Mac P Dawg, born Joshua Andrade Galvez, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the LAPD, the 24-year-old rapper and an unidentified woman were approached by an armed male suspect on foot, who shot both of them and fled in an unknown vehicle. The unnamed female victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for her injuries. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and police still have no suspects.

5. Chynna

American rapper, disc jockey, and model Chynna Rogers died of an accidental overdose on April 8, 2020. She was found unresponsive at her Philadelphia home and was only 25 years old. Chynna left behind Michael Magness, her father, her two brothers, Jeremy Payne and Michael Magness, and a sister Nala Magness. Chynna’s mother, Wendy Payne, died in 2017.

6. Fred The Godson

Fred the Godson passed away on April 23, 2020, after testing positive for COVID-19 and was 41 years when he passed. The Bronx rapper born Fredrick Thomas, was rushed to the ICU on April 6 after having breathing difficulties and was diagnosed with COVID-19. He was placed on a ventilator because his lungs were not working, and his kidneys were also affected the following day. On April 23, Fred lost his battle and died. Fred left behind a wife, LeeAnn Jemmott, and two daughters.

7. Huey

Lawrence Franks Jr, popularly known as Huey, was shot dead on June 25, 2020, in St. Louis and was 32 years old. He was known for his 2006 hit “Pop, Lock & Drop It.” According to St. Louis County police, Huey was one of two people who were shot in a drive-by shooting in front of a Missouri home. Huey was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other shooting victim was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.

8. Stepa J. Groggs

Jordan Alexander Groggs, popularly known as Stepa J. Groggs, passed away on June 30, 2020. The 32-year-old was part of Arizona’s hip-hop trio Injury Reserve. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Groggs left behind his girlfriend Anna and their four children Joey, Jayden, Toph, and Ari.

9. Marlo

Quality Control Music signee Lil Marlo was shot dead in Atlanta on July 11, 2020. Atlanta police responded to a car crash on I-285 near the Benjamin E. Mays overpass at 11:30 hp.m., and found the Atlantan rapper dead inside with a gunshot wound. They believe he was the target of the shooting. Marlo, born Rudolph Johnson, who was 30 years old at the time, had been on the Quality Control label since 2017. The investigation is still ongoing, and police have no suspects in the case. Marlo left behind his four children: Kemora, Rihanna, Marlo, and Rudy.

10. Malik B

American rapper and founding member of Philadelphia-based hip-hop band The Roots,Malik B, died on July 29, 2020. He was 47 years old at the time of his untimely passing, and the cause of death wasn’t disclosed. Malik’s passing was confirmed by his cousin Don Champion who tweeted, “Mourning my beloved cousin today. He was so talented and had a huge heart. I still remember when he and The Roots were starting out. He’d give me and my dad their cassette tapes to listen to. I miss you already, Mailk.” Malik B, real name Malik Abdul Basit, appeared on The Roots’ first four albums before leaving the group in 1999. He released two albums as a solo artist.

11. FBG Duck

FBG Duck

Chicago rapper FBG Duck was dead while shopping in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood during the daytime on August 4, 2020. He was 26 years old at the time of his passing. A 28-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man were also wounded during the shooting. According to the Chicago Police Department, FBG Duck, born Carlton D. Weekly, was struck three times and later died at a local hospital. The second victim was seriously injured with gunshot wounds to his back and torso. The woman was shot in the hand. The case is still under investigation, and police have no suspects. FBG Duck has left behind, LaSheena Weekly his mother, and his four children.

12. King Von

KING VON

Chicago rapper King Von was shot dead outside Monaco hookah nightclub in Atlanta after an altercation with Quando Rondo’s crew. The 26-year-old was one of the two men who were shot dead. Timothy Leeke was arrested and charged with Von’s murder leading to the closure of King Von’s murder case. Leeke was apparently Quando Rondo’s friend and was responsible for starting the altercation outside the nightclub in Atlanta.

13. Mo3

Born Melvin Noble, rapper Mo3 was shot dead by an unknown gunman in his hometown of Dallas, Texas on November 11, 2020. The 28-year-old rapper was driving in Dallas when he was approached by an armed suspect who had gotten out of his car with a gun. Mo3 got out of his vehicle and began running southward on the highway. The suspect ran after the rapper and shot at him multiple times, with one bullet striking him in the head. Mo3 was transported to a local hospital where he died. An innocent bystander was also shot at the scene and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police have arrested Kewon White.

Irish boxer Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will go head to head today, seven years since the duo last fought.

The world anticipated the historic UFC 257 Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier rematch, and now it is here. The duo fought last in 2014, and over the years they have changed.

For instance, Poirier won a couple of fights against boxers like Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Eddie Alvarez. Apart from getting some titles, McGregor fought in 2017 with Floyd Mayweather, a match he lost.

There are other anticipated fights like Michael Chandler against Dan Hooker. Michael is after the title because he wants to add it to his wins while for Hooker, this could be a chance to redeem himself after losing to Poirier last year.

Like boxer Khabib Nurmagomedov, many fans are predicting that McGregor will take the win, but we can not be so sure as Poirier has been working and preparing hard for the fight. Besides, Conor has not fought for the last one year. It sure will be contested.

McGregor is reported to earn more than twenty million dollars from the Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier fight.

XXXTENTACION, whose real name is Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, would have turned 23 today. Hip hop lost a legend in the making when the American rapper, singer, and songwriter was shot dead on June 18, 2018 afternoon.

XXX was shot dead just outside RIVA Motorsports in Deerbeach in an apparent robbery. The then 20-year-old was out shopping for a motorcycle. He was shot multiple times in the neck and was in critical condition before being pronounced dead at 5.30 p.m.

Many took to Twitter to pay tribute to the fallen legend and wish him a happy birthday. Below are some of the birthday tributes.

Cardi B is back with another Reebok collaboration, and this time they are going neon. The rapper teased the new collaboration on her Instagram.

The Insta post was a picture of the WAP” hitmaker holding a neon pink Reebok shoe. The caption read, “My next @reebok drop is going to be sooo bute & fun!!!! can’t wait!!!! I wish I can put it on right now! I mean I could, but I wanna wait!! Who ready?”

The sneaker takes inspiration from streetwear styles. It has high-shine patent uppers and a see-through lifted midsole. The neon pink colorways will drop on February 12 a.m. ET.

Along with the neon pink, a neon yellow version and an all-white version will be released on the same day. The shoes will be going for a retail price of $100 on Reebok.com.

Also dropping are her other Reebok collabs, the sold-out Club C and Coated Double C Double. These will be released on February 5.

The two silhouettes will come in Hi-Vis Green, Dynamic Pink, and White colorways. The Club C Cardi for kids and infants, which will be selling for $45, will be in a Classic Pink colorway.

Soulja Boy Plans On Taking Legal Action Against Ex-Assistant Who Sued Him for Sexual Assault

American rapper Soulja Boy was recently sued over sexual assault and battery allegations by his former personal assistant. The woman filed as ‘Jane Doe’ also claimed that Soulja Boy created a hostile environment and refused to pay her. She claims that apart from raping her on several occasions, the rapper also held her hostage for three days.

Soulja Boy denied the allegations through a rep who told TMZ,

“Soulja would never put his hands on a female. He wouldn’t beat a woman or put his hands on a woman … this is non-sense!!!”

The ‘Kiss Me Through The Phone’ hit-maker is now planning on taking legal action against the woman. In a statement to TMZ on Friday, January 22, he revealed that he’s talking to his lawyers to review his options.

“I vehemently and unequivocally deny these allegations. I am in contact with my legal team and the appropriate legal action will be taken against these lies,

Soulja Boy

The rapper had also been sued in January 2020 on similar grounds of sexual assault by his ex-girlfriend Kayla Meyers.

XXXTENTACION’s ‘SAD’ Hits 1 Billion Views On YouTube

Even in death, XXXTENTACION continues to make an impact through his music. XXX’s most famous song, ‘SAD,’ hit more than 1 billion views on YouTube on January 14, joining other elite tracks in the 1B club.

The track, which was released in 2018, was the lead single from the album, ?. The track is XXX’s highest-charting single.

SAD‘ peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 following his tragic death, making him the first act to earn the posthumous Hot 100 number-one single as a lead artist since Notorious B.I.G. in “Mo Money Mo Problems” in 1997.

XXX, who was shot dead in 2018, worked on SAD with producer John Cunningham. The song debuted as number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had 66 million streams in 12 days.
